RUSTON - South Alabama scored a run in the top of the 10th inning to outlast Louisiana Tech 4-3 Thursday afternoon at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
The loss spoiled a quality afternoon by Tech starter Krissi Oliver who not only performed well on the mound but who came up with the game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh inning - sending the game to extra frames.
Tech (15-13) struggled offensively throughout the game as three USA hurlers limited the Lady Techsters to only three hits in the entire contest.
South Alabama (10-11) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as back to back two-out RBI singles off of Oliver plated the runs. Both runs were earned although a fielder's choice earlier in the frame in which Tech failed to retire any proved costly as the Lady Techsters should have already been out of the inning.
Tech scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Amberly Waits led the inning off by reaching base on a hit by pitch and then promptly stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the USA catcher.
Regan Clark drove Waits home with a sacrifice fly to right field, making the score 2-1.
USA's pitchers continued to cruise until the bottom of the seventh when Oliver launched her third home run of the season over the left field wall, tying the game at 2-2.
The international tiebreaker rule was used starting in the top of the eighth inning. After USA failed to score in its at bat, Tech had a runner on third base and one out but Emma Barnes lined out to shortstop and Danielle Sheridan grounded out to second base to end the Lady Techster threat.
Both teams plated a run in the ninth inning. Tech scored when Sheridan - who began the frame on second base - scored on a sacrifice fly by Kylie Bassett, once again tying the score at 3-3.
USA scored with a two-out hit in the top of the 10th inning off Tech reliever Meghan Krieg, as the Jaguars took a 4-3 advantage.
Tech was unable to score in its at bat as it snapped its three-game winning streak.
The Lady Techsters return to action Saturday and Sunday when they travel to Lawrence, Kansas, to face Kansas and Buffalo in a three-team tournament.
