RENO, Nev. - Louisiana Tech begins its seventh season of Western Athletic Conference baseball on Thursday as it travels to "The Biggest Little City in the World" to face always-tough Nevada in a four-game series. Game times are set for 8 p.m. CT on Thursday and Friday, and a Saturday doubleheader begins at 3 p.m. CT.
Tech (13-6) is coming off a 10-4 victory over Grambling State on Tuesday night in Ruston, the fourth straight win for the Bulldogs. Freshman Casey Jones got his first career win with two innings of shutout ball, and six pitchers in all saw action in the game. Chris Kersten hit his fourth home run of the season, an impressive feat into a very stiff southeast wind.
Nevada (8-8) defeated Pacific on Tuesday, 10-0, after splitting a pair of weekend games with two-time defending national champion Oregon State. The Wolf Pack took Friday's game, 10-1, before dropping Saturday's contest, 17-10. The teams were snowed out on Sunday. The Wolf Pack lead the league in hitting and boast the top three individual averages in the league in Shaun Kort, Jason Rodriguez and David Ciarlo.
The action begins Thursday as junior righthander Dylan Moseley (1-2, 3.72) will get the start for Tech against Nevada righthander Kyle Howe (1-0, 3.09).
Friday's game will feature senior Alan Knotts (2-0, 3.32) against senior righthander Rod Scurry (2-2, 4.37). Knotts leads the Bulldogs and is currently fifth in the WAC with 21 strikeouts on the season. It will be the senior's first career start in conference play.
Game one of Saturday's doubleheader pits Tech junior Jericho Jones (4-1, 4.70) against Wolf Pack lefthander Chris Garcia (0-2, 6.33). Starters for the second game of the doubleheader have not yet been determined.
Last season, Nevada took two of three from the Bulldogs, but Tech took an emotionally-charged series finale at Peccole Park that saw two Nevada players and a coach ejected from the contest following a rough play at home plate that cleared the benches. Tech is 7-23 all-time against the Wolf Pack with a 3-9 record in Reno. This is the first visit to Peccole Park since last season's WAC Tournament, in which Tech dropped a pair of contests to Fresno State and San Jose State.
Fans in northern Louisiana can catch all four games on ESPN 97.7 FM as Dave Nitz will call the action. Bulldog fans outside the KNBB-FM listening area can log on to www.espn977.com for a live audio stream. Live stats will be available through GameTracker at www.latechsports.com and through Nevada's official web site, www.nevadawolfpack.com.
