RUSTON--The White team's Mike Jefferson threw five and two thirds scoreless innings and eight strikeouts Monday night to earn a 3-0 win over the Blue team. The win gave White a 3-2 series lead in the Fall World Series.
White team third baseman Will Alvis notched his first homerun of the series with a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning to put White up 3-0. Senior Clay Alxander also recorded an RBI for the White team with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
"It was a well played, clean game on defense by both sides tonight," Tech head coach Wade Simoneaux said. "(Mike) Jefferson was dominant on the mound, striking out eight batters and Clay Alexander and Will Alvis provided all the offense that was necessary on the night."
Jefferson (1-0) only gave up two hits while walking two in the shutout victory. The sophomore has now appeared in two games for the series and has accumulated an impressive 1.69 ERA through 10.2 innings pitched with 14 strikeouts allowing opposing batters to hit just .167 against him. Cody Watts (1) was credited with the save after relieving Jefferson with two outs in the sixth inning after Jefferson had reached his pitch count limit. Watts gave up no runs while striking out two in one and one third of an inning.
True freshman Trevor Peterson (0-1) pitched well in a loss for the Blue as he gave up three runs while striking out three in three and two thirds innings of work. Jamelle Clements came in relief of Peterson and did not give up a hit in his two and one third innings of work.
"I'm very pleased with the progression of our pitching through the series," Simoneaux said. "I know we are going to be able to score runs in the spring, so it was good to see both team's pitchers come out and throw well."
The first run of the ballgame came in the second inning when Devon Dageford led off the inning with a double down the left field line. With Dageford on second the White team displayed a textbook manufacturing of a run as Clint Ewing bunted Dageford over to third before Clay Alexander knocked him in with a sacrifice fly to right field.
In the fourth inning the White team would add a little insurance when third baseman Will Alvis slapped a two out line drive homerun over the right centerfield fence with Ewing on first to make it 3-0.
In game four action, the White team evened the series at two by taking a 7-1 win Saturday afternoon behind the pitching of senior Jamey Bradshaw. Bradshaw (2-0) pitched six strong innings, striking out four.
The Blue team will look to even the series at three games apiece when the Fall World Series continues action Tuesday night at 6 p.m. CT at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park. There will be no GameTracker for Tuesday night's game.
