HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Louisiana Tech banged out a season-high 11 hits and capitalized on four errors to down Alabama State 5-2 Saturday morning in the first game of the Mizzuno Classic hosted by Southern Miss.
However, the Tech bats were silenced in the second game of the day as South Alabama blanked the Lady Techsters 2-0.
In game No. 1, Tech (4-5) fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning as the Hornets (0-10) Ariel Gainey drew a leadoff walk and then stole second base. Gainey then scored on a throwing error by Tech third baseman Summer Young to give Alabama State the early advantage.
Tech struck for two runs in the top of the second inning as Amanda Parsonage singled and Claire Gibson reached on an error with one out. One out later, Heather Doiron walked to load the bases and Danielle Sheridan followed with a two-out two-run single to centerfield to give the Lady Techsters the 2-1 lead.
Alabama State tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as Quaneisha Limbrick doubled with one out and then moved to third on a single by Forte. Limbrick scored on a sacrifice fly by Ayesha Famble tying the game at 2-2.
Tech added two runs in the fifth inning. After the first two batters were retired, Parsonage and Young each singled to put runners on first and second before Gibson registered an RBI single to right field, scoring Parsonage and giving Tech a 3-2 lead. Emma Barnes then reached on a fielding error by Alabama State which allowed Young to score.
The Lady Techsters added an insurance run in the sixth as Sheridan walked and then stole second and eventually scored on another fielding error by Alabama State.
Sophomore hurler Jordan Simmons (1-0) picked up the win for Tech, allowing two earned runs on three hits and only one walk in 5.0 innings of action. Simmons fanned four.
Krissi Oliver picked up her first save of the year, allowing two hits while striking out one over the final 2.0 innings of work.
Parsonage and Gibson each recorded two hits for Tech while Sheridan registered two RBI and Gibson one.
In game two of the day, South Alabama pitcher Beth Pilgrim (4-4) picked up the win allowing only two hits and four walks while striking out 10 in the complete-game performance.
USA (4-7) scored single runs in the first and seventh innings off of Oliver (1-4), who picked up the loss despite allowing only six hits and one walk in 7.0 innings of action. Oliver fanned six.
Tech's best scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning when Amberly Waits walked and Krissi Oliver reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second with two outs. However, Jessica Kirby struck out to end the threat.
Oliver and Gibson recorded the only two hits of the game for Tech.
The Lady Techsters return to action Sunday when they face Nicholls State at 2 p.m. and Southern Miss at 7 p.m.
