RUSTON -- Hawaii freshman Stephanie Ricketts threw a one-hitter to lead the Rainbow Wahine to a 4-0 win over Louisiana Tech Sunday in the final contest of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series.
Ricketts (8-5) came within one out of throwing her second no-hitter in two days against the Lady Techsters, but Kylie Bassett singled up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to ruin the bid.
Bassett's single gave Tech (13-13, 1-2 WAC) only its second base runner of the day as shortstop Amberly Waits reached base in the fifth inning when she was hit with a Ricketts' pitch with two outs.
Tech starter Krissi Oliver (5-9) received zero offensive support for the second straight day in the circle, picking up the loss allowing four runs -- three earned -- on four hits in 5.0 innings of action. Oliver recorded six strikeouts before giving way to reliever Meghan Krieg, who pitched the final two innings striking out four.
Hawaii (13-17, 2-1 WAC) scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take what turned out to be a comfortable lead.
The Rainbow Wahine took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Audrey Andrade over the left field fence to lead off the third inning. Dara Pagaduan and Tanisha Milca followed with back to back doubles to make the score 2-0.
Milca then scored on a throwing error by Tech catcher Jessica Kirby to make the score 3-0.
UH added an insurance run in the fifth as Pagaduan doubled and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Clare Warwick.
Tech's only real threat of the game came with two outs in the final frame when Bassett singled and Oliver reached on a fielding error by Hawaii shortstop Julie Franklin. However, the threat was ended when Kirby grounded out to end the game.
The Lady Techsters return to action Monday when they host Alcorn State at 5 p.m. in a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for early March but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
