RUSTON -- The Louisiana Tech women's soccer team has been very active in the community within the past two weeks as they have assisted with the Special Olympics, Boys and Girls Club and Habitat for Humanity.
"Giving back to the community is one of our pillars of our soccer culture," Tech head coach Kevin Sherry said. "We insist that our players understand the importance of giving and never taking anything for granted."
At the Special Olympics on March 20, the ladies were responsible for timing events and assisting with the races.
A few days later, the team volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club in Ruston. They instructed 50-60 children from the area on the fundamentals of soccer. The student-athletes also played other sports with the kids, including basketball.
"We try to develop the whole person in our program," Sherry said. "We want each of them to be well-rounded academically, socially and as soccer players. That is very important to me. By the time our players graduate, we want them to leave as great people."
Last Saturday, the Lady Techsters helped build a home in Ruston for Habitat for Humanity. The student-athletes painted, sanded and helped cut wood during their time at the site.
