HAMMOND -- Amberly Waits grand slam home run highlighted an eight-run second inning as Louisiana Tech defeated Southeastern Louisiana 10-1 Wednesday afternoon in the second game of a softball doubleheader at North Oak Park.
Senior Krissi Oliver (3-6) benefited from the offensive outburst, picking up the win by pitching 3.0 scoreless innings before giving way to reliever Jordan Simmons.
After Tech (10-8) scratched for a run on an RBI single by Waits in the top of the first inning, the Lady Techsters erupted for eight runs on six hits in the top of the second inning -- equaling the most runs Tech had scored in an entire game this season.
With one out in the frame, Claire Gibson, Summer Young and Heather Doiron all singled to load the bases and Emma Barnes drew a walk to make the score 2-0. After a Danielle Sheridan RBI single to right field, Waits cranked a grand slam over the right field fence for her third home run of the year -- and second of the day.
The Techsters led 7-0 but weren't done. Jessica Kirby walked, Elizabeth Franklin singled and Amanda Parsonage singled to load the bases with one out. Gibson then grounded out to third base to drive home Kirby making the score 8-0. Franklin would then score on a pass ball before Southeastern Louisiana (7-9) finally got out of the inning.
Tech added a solo run in the top of the third inning as Doiron singled and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by pinch hitter Valerie Quiroga.
The Lions would score their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning off Simmons on an RBI double by Katie Duhe.
Oliver got the win in the circle, allowing only two hits while striking out three in 3.0 innings of action. Simmons allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out one over the final 2.0 innings of work.
Waits led Tech with two hits and five RBI while Sheridan and Doiron each recorded two hits in the contest.
Tech returns to action Friday with a 3 p.m. contest against Stephen F. Austin at the Texas A&M Invitational.
