SHREVEPORT, La. -- Rachel King and Amy Wolsted both contributed a goal in Louisiana Tech's 2-0 win over Centenary Wednesday night at Mayo Field.
"First off, I would like to give Centenary credit for playing as well as they did tonight," Tech head coach Kevin Sherry said. "They played last night and followed yesterday's effort with a strong one tonight.
"I saw tactical improvement in our play this evening, which was good to see. By improving tactically, it shows me that our hard work in practice is paying off. I still believe there is room for improvement, but to improve, we need to put more hard work and repetition in."
Tonight's game was an 11 v. 11 match on a regulation field. Originally, the two teams were scheduled to play three 30-minute periods, but the two teams played two 40-minute halves instead.
The Techsters had an opportunity to score in the 14th minute as Scotti Culton played a ball directly back to Kiva Gresham, just in front of Centenary's 18-yard line. Gresham put a good strike on the ball, but it deflected off the cross bar.
Culton hit another great ball on a free kick near Centenary's left corner, but the Techsters were unable to put a foot on the ball.
Centenary registered their first shot of the match before the 30th minute, but goalkeeper Cat Buchanan smothered what could have been an opportunity for the Ladies.
Brooke Lanie kicked the ball on net from 20 yards out in the 35th minute, but Centenary's goalkeeper was unable to complete the save. King capitalized on the goalkeeper's mistake and put Tech ahead 1-0 by scoring off the rebound.
In the second half, Wolsted scored Tech's second goal of the night after she struck the ball approximately 25 yards out at the 63rd minute mark.
Jean Bernard subbed-in for Buchanan in the second half. The two freshmen goalkeepers combined for a shutout in the win.
Tech will return to the pitch at the Kick for a Cure Tournament in Little Rock, Ark. Saturday, April 4.
