HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Louisiana Tech (2-9-1, 1-1-0 CUSA) fell in a tightly contested battle, 1-0, in their first CUSA road test to the Sam Houston Bearkats (4-3-2, 1-0-1 CUSA) Sunday afternoon at Pritchett Field in Huntsville.
The 'Dogs and the Bearkats battled to a scoreless first half on a hot and sunny Texas afternoon. Just seven shots combined were taken between the two sides with Sam Houston putting all five of their attempts in frame and LA Tech putting one of their two in goal.
The Bearkats looked like they had the first score of the match in the net in the later half of the 26th minute before offsides was called to negate the score.
After 84 minutes of each side looking to crack the scoreboard, Sam Houston was given a penalty after a hand ball was called in the box. After minutes of discussion passed between the refs, the Bearkats attempted their penalty which was deflected away on good anticipation by keeper Candence Rutledge.
Nearly three minutes later, Sam Houston took an attempt at the goal that was knocked away by the keeper before an incoming Bearkat forward came in for the rebound and found the back of the net.
The Bulldogs return to the home pitch in Ruston to continue Conference USA play against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Thursday, October 2 and the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on Sunday, October 5. Thursday's first touch is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and Sunday's match is set to start at 1 p.m. CT.
Head Coach Steve Voltz following Sunday's match
"I'm absolutely gutted for our team. We went into a tough environment and competed hard in a physical game. We did a good job shutting out the external factors and still left the field without a point. Our resilience is tested again, and I'm sure our team will show up ready on Thursday."
