Petersen and Winn Selected in Second Day of MLB Draft

June 10, 2009

NEW YORK -- Louisiana Tech signee Trevor Petersen was selected in the 23rd round (709th overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays and former Bulldog Kevin Winn was drafted in the 26th round (774th overall) by the San Diego Padres in day two of the MLB First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday.

Petersen, a 2008 early period signee, lettered four years at Hallsville High School in Hallsville, Texas. Prior to the start of his senior season, the 6-3, 215-pound right-hander was one of 29 pitchers to be named to the Louisville Slugger Preseason High School All-American First Team.

In 2008, as a junior, Petersen threw eight complete games and posted an 11-3 record with a 2.06 ERA. In 82 innings pitched, he struck out 110 and only walked 18.

Winn was one of only two Bulldogs to play and start all 51 games this past season. The native of Bowling Green, Ky. led the team with 81 hits and 24 walks. He finished second on the squad in batting average (.380), doubles (19) and RBI (63). He also scored 51 runs, smashed one triple and nine home runs. On average, the second baseman struck out once every 19 times at the plate.

Between the 2008-09 seasons, Winn put together a 33-game hitting streak, the longest in the nation since Tim Alberts from Niagara strung together a 35-game streak between the 2006-07 seasons.
