Nitz Named Louisiana Sportscaster of the Year

Jan. 18, 2010

RUSTON, La. - The "Voice of the Bulldogs" Dave Nitz has been named the Louisiana Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

Nitz, who started with Louisiana Tech in 1974 is in his 35th year broadcasting Bulldog basketball, football and baseball.

"I've always said that the guys on the field and the court are the ones that made me," Nitz said. "I've had some great players to talk about and great fans at Louisiana Tech to broadcast for in my 35 years."

A native of Milton, West Virginia, Nitz recently called his 2,000th game at LA Tech on Dec. 22. His time at Tech is the fourth-longest tenure of any current broadcaster at one school.

"It has been an honor to have a man like Dave Nitz call our games," Tech men's basketball coach Kerry Rupp said. "He does an excellent job."

The NSSA was founded in 1959 in Salisbury, NC by a local group interested in honoring sportscasters and sportswriters for their crafts. More than 700 NSSA members from several sports media fields vote annually for State and National Sportscasters and Sportswriters of the Year.
