HONOLULU - Goalkeeper Caitlin Updyke recorded her sixth shutout of the season as the Louisiana Tech soccer team won at Hawai'i 3-0 on Friday.
Updyke's shutout tied her with teammate Cat Buchanan for the school record for most shutouts in a season, but more importantly improved the Lady Techsters record to 14-5 overall and 4-3 in the Western Athletic Conference.
"It wasn't the prettiest of soccer, but it got the job done," said head coach Kevin Sherry. Hawai'i was a very tough opponent."
Junior Olivia Lukasewich put the Lady Techsters on the board first with a goal in the 22nd minute. Mo Rockwell passed the ball up to Rachel King who then crossed it to Lukasewich who scored past Rainbow Wahine goalkeeper Kanani Taaca.
The score remained 1-0 for much of the contest until the 77th minute when junior Scotti Culton was fouled in the penalty box. She connected on the penalty kick, her second in the last three games, to give Tech a 2-0 lead.
Two minutes later, senior Kiva Gresham scored her 11th goal of the season. King took the initial shot which was blocked by Taaca. However, the ball went to Gresham who scored off the rebound. King was credited with her second assist of the game.
Tech outshot the Rainbow Wahine (3-12-2, 1-3-1 WAC) 13-12 including 10 shots in the second period. The Lady Techsters took eight shots-on-goal, led by King with three.
LA Tech wraps up the regular season next Friday at New Mexico State at 6 p.m. CT.
