RUSTON - Whitney Jones scored 15 points and recorded seven steals in only 13 minutes to lead Louisiana Tech to a 93-18 exhibition victory over an outmanned Division II Oklahoma Panhandle State team Friday night at the Thomas Assembly Center.
Jones connected on seven of eight field goals and made a living in the passing lanes as she converted steal after steal into easy buckets for herself and her Lady Techsters teammates in the win.
"It was good to give everyone some minutes," Weatherspoon said. "After all the hard work all of them have put in during practice, it was nice to see all of them get quality minutes. We are coming together as a team.
"Defensively we were much better tonight, then the other night. We were really aggressive with our man-to-man, got out in the passing lanes, hounded the ball and just put forth a much better effort."
Junior guard Angie Felton registered her second straight double figure scoring game with 14 points while Martina Holloway hit all five of her field goals, including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, to add 13 points and three steals during the night.
Red-shirt freshman Tavasha Anderson recorded a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while adding two blocks and two assists. Sophomore Reina Kempt scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds while Adrienne Johnson and Tarkeisha Wysinger-Mackey each scored eight points in limited action.
Brietta Thomas scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds as well.
Tech shot 56 percent (39-70) for the game while hitting 7-of-15 three-pointers and 8-of-9 free throws while Oklahoma Panhandle State converted only 12 percent (6-50) of its field goals on the night.
"Offensively, we are still learning to be patient with our offense," Weatherspoon said. "We have to allow our offense to develop. We can't rush the first shot but instead go through all of our options. All in all, I do see us getting better."
Weatherspoon said although the score was one-sided, she was impressed with the effort put forth by head coach Brad Vanden Boogaard's team.
"One thing I loved about Oklahoma Panhandle State is those kids played hard," Weatherspoon said. "They never stopped playing hard. That is a key to rebuilding a program. You have to have kids that play hard and those kids never gave up. It's a tribute to them and their staff."
The Lady Techsters outrebounded OPSU 54-22.
Tech opens regular season action Nov. 13 against Prairie View A&M at 6 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center.
