Louisiana Tech's valiant comeback fell just short Saturday morning as the Lady Techsters fell 7-6 to Stephen F. Austin in the first game of the Southern Miss Mizuno Classic hosted in Hattiesburg.
Tech (2-1) found itself down 7-1 and being no-hit heading into the bottom of the sixth inning but the Lady Techsters bats came alive, plating five runs in the frame - three coming on a two-out basis-loaded double by sophomore Val Quiroga.
Trailing 7-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Amberly Waits registered a two-out single to put the tying run on base but SFA reliever Monika Covington struck Kylie Bassett out for the final out of the game.
Freshman Michelle Jones (1-1) picked up the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work. Jones gave up all five runs in the top of the second inning - four of them coming with two outs in the frame.
Freshman Janna Frandrup came on in relief, making her first collegiate appearance. Frandrup pitched well, allowing two earned runs on six hits over 4.1 innings of work before giving way to Meghan Krieg who pitched a scoreless seventh.
SFA starter Angela White (1-2) picked up her first win of the season, allowing four earned runs on three hits through 5.2 innings of work. Covington picked up her first save of the season for SFA (2-5).
White had a no-hitter through 5.0 innings before walking Sarah Offutt to begin the sixth. Ole Miss transfer Molly Goza then recorded a pinch hit single, breaking the no-hitter and setting the table for LA Tech's five-run frame.
Sophomore Kendra Harmon plated two runs on a two-run double, making the score 7-3. Quiroga then came through with a bases clearing double, making the score 7-6 and chasing White from the game.
