ARLINGTON, Texas - Janna Frandrup hit her first career home run and Louisiana Tech took advantage of the lone error of the game as the Lady Techsters defeated Texas-Arlington 5-2 Tuesday night at Allan Saxe Field.
Tech (18-11) used a strong pitching performance by junior Meghan Krieg, who allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five in the complete-game performance. Krieg was one out away from her third shutout of the season before allowing a two-out two-run single in the bottom of the seventh.
However, with the potential tying run at the plate, Krieg (14-9) struck out Mavs outfielder Cara Hulme for the final out of the game.
Frandrup, a freshman from Phoenix, Arizona, gave Tech a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning as she hit a solo home run off the foul pole down the left field line.
Tech, which played without reigning WAC Player of the Year Amberly Waits who was under the weather, then blew the game open with a four-run fourth inning. With one out, freshman Meghan Knowles lined a double to left centerfield. One out later, Claire Gibson drew a walk to put runners on first and second with two outs.
Sophomore Amanda Parsonage then lined a single to left field, scoring Knowles and giving Tech a 2-0 lead. With runners on second and third, Kallan Thompson hit a routine grounder to second base that was fielded cleanly but the throw to first base was dropped, allowing Gibson to score and keeping the inning alive.
Kendra Harmon then lined the first pitch she saw to the right centerfield fence for a two-run double and a 5-0 lead.
Krieg cruised through the first three innings retiring the first 10 batters she faced until Hulme drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth inning.
However, UTA stranded two runners in both the fourth and sixth innings as Krieg kept the five-run lead intact.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, a single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs before Rebecca Collom singled up the middle to score two runs and make the score 5-2. Krieg then struck out Hulme swinging to end the game.
Parsonage led Tech with two hits and one RBI while Harmon (2 RBI), Frandrup (1 RBI), Jessica Kirby, Knowles, and Valerie Quiroga each added one hit.
Tech returns to action this weekend when it hosts New Mexico State in a three-game series starting with a single game Friday at 6 p.m.
