Game Notes
Louisiana Tech will play its toughest competition yet this season when it hosts Texas State on Friday at 3:30 at Lady Techster Soccer Field.
"We are going into this game as the underdog so we have nothing to lose," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "This should provide some good insight for when we get to conference play. I'm expecting them to be as strong as a lot of the WAC teams."
Sherry has good reason to compare the Bobcats to teams in the Western Athletic Conference as TSU played Fresno State earlier this season. They lost to the Bulldogs 1-0 in double overtime. Texas State had a big 1-0 win over Utah Valley in the team's second game of the season. Utah Valley beat WAC preseason runner-up Boise State this past weekend.
Texas State enters Friday's contest with a 2-3 record and coming off a 3-2 double overtime win over Navy. Eighteen letterwinners return from last season's Bobcat team that went 15-6-1 and placed first in the Southland Conference, earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Louisiana Tech (5-2) is playing their best soccer so far this season as they are on a three-game winning streak, having won those games by a combined score of 15-1. Reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Week Rachel King is coming off a six-goal performance last week and currently leads Tech with seven goals.
Freshman Caitlin Updyke has made the majority of the starts in goal for the Lady Techsters and has recorded 12 saves to just three goals against. Junior goalkeeper Cat Buchanan is coming off her first start at the position since the team's season opener. Due to the solid play of Tech's defense against McNeese State, Buchanan's job was made a little easier as she needed just one save to record her first shutout of the season.
Texas State leads the all-time series with Tech 1-0. The Bobcats defeated the Lady Techsters 2-0 in 2006 in Nacogdoches, Texas as part of the Stephen F. Austin Tournament.
