Lady Techsters Open Home Schedule with Win over Southern

Feb. 11, 2011

Results

RUSTON, La. - Recording all four of its points in singles, the Louisiana Tech tennis team defeated Southern 4-3 Friday at the Louisiana Tech Tennis Complex.

After getting losing the double point, the Lady Techsters received wins from their top four singles players and improved to 2-0 on the season. It also avenged last season's 4-3 loss to the Lady Jaguars (1-1).

With the score tied 3-3, all eyes were on the No. 1 singles match of Tech junior Elne Barnard and Southern junior Carlista Mohammed. Barnard won the first set 6-2, but lost the second 6-7 (2). Barnard led the third set 4-1 before fighting some nerves to win the set 6-4 and give the Lady Techsters the win.

"She's tough," head coach Quintin Yray said. "Elne doesn't crack mentally. During the match she might get a little nervous, but she's a tough player. She's got a lot of weapons so sometimes she takes the wrong shot when there might be an easier shot for her. She's gaining more confidence as she goes so this was good for her."

Tech dominated No. 2 - No. 4 singles. Freshman Melanie Urvoy defeated Kathryn Curtis 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, junior Anna Zureck defeated Demetria Woods 6-1, 6-2 and in No. 4 singles it was junior Maartje de Wit beating Lisbeth Castanda 6-1, 6-0.

The Lady Techsters will host Central Arkansas at 10 a.m. on Saturday before playing at Stephen F. Austin on Sunday.
