Molly Goza and
Heather Doiron combined to drive home all five runs and
Meghan Krieg got out of a late-inning jam to lead Louisiana Tech to a 5-4 win over Bowling Green Saturday evening at the LSU Tiger Classic.
The Lady Techsters (2-2) won despite stranding 11 runners on base and almost watching an early 5-0 lead complete evaporate late in the game.
Tech got started early by plating two runs in the top of the second inning. After Allie Geisler single with one out in the frame, Goza drove her first home run of the year over the centerfield fence to give the Lady Techsters a 2-0 advantage.
The Lady Techsters had a golden opportunity to add to the lead in the frame after three straight singles by Doiron, Cassie Krieg and Emma Eichmann loaded the bases with one out. However, Kendra Harmon lined out to centerfield and Charday Wilson struck out to end the threat.
Tech added to its lead in the top of the third inning as the first three Lady Techsters batters reached base on walks to load the bases. Goza then singled to left field, upping the advantage to 3-0. Doiron then followed with a two-run single to right center as the lead increased to 5-0.
Krieg (1-1) was cruising along until the bottom of the third when she allowed an unearned run when a two-out error by Eichmann allowed Bowling Green to make the score 5-1.
Bowling Green struck again in the fourth inning. After Krieg retired the first two batters, Katie Yoho drew a walk and then Adrienne Dick followed with a two-run blast over the centerfield wall making the score 5-3.
Tech had ample opportunity to build on its lead but left five runners on base over the next three frames, giving the Falcons a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Andrea Arney lead the frame off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly for the first out of the inning - cutting the Tech lead to 5-4.
Two more Falcon singles bookended the second out of the inning as Krieg faced Zada Lines with the tying run on second and the game-winning run on first. However, Krieg won the battle, inducing a groundout to second base for the final out of the inning.
Krieg picked up the win, allowing four runs - three earned - on eight hits and two walks while striking out five.
Goza led Tech with three hits and three RBI while Doiron added two hits and two RBI. Wilson, Meghan Knowles, Cassie Krieg, Eichmann and Michelle Jones each registered one hit for the Lady Techsters.
Tech ends the tournament Sunday with a 3 p.m. game against the 19th ranked Tigers.
