STARKVILLE - Despite taking a four-run lead in the first inning, Louisiana Tech was unable to hold on as the Lady Techsters fell 8-7 to Southern Illinois Saturday morning in the third game of the Mississippi State Bulldog Round Robin.
Tech (2-5) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on the preseason favorites to win the Missouri Valley Conference, but the Redbirds scored in every at bat including plating the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Lady Techsters opened the scoring in the first on a bases loaded walk drawn by Heather Doiron, scoring Kendra Harmon who led the game off with a walk. Molly Goza then followed with a bases-clearing double down the right field line, making the score 4-0.
After Southern Illinois answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning, Tech struck again in the third as Goza reached on an error and eventually scored on a wild pitch, upping the advantage to 5-1.
Southern Illinois plated three runs in the bottom of the third before the Lady Techsters answered that rally. Charday Wilson led the fourth off with an infield single as SIU brought in MVC Pitcher of the Year Danielle Glosson, who was promptly greeted by a two-run home run by Janna Frandrup, giving Tech a 7-4 lead.
The Salukis answered again in the bottom of the fourth inning as freshman Jayna Spivey hit a two-out, two-run home run off Tech starter Erin Kipp, closing the gap to 7-6.
After Tech failed to score in the fifth, Frandrup relieved Kipp in the circle. However, a double, a walk, a throwing error and a sacrifice fly plated two runs as the Salukis took their first lead of the game at 8-7.
Tech got the leadoff runner aboard in the top of the seventh, but after a strikeout and a double play pop up in the infield ended the game.
Frandrup and Goza each recorded two hits while combining for five RBI in the game. Harmon and Wilson registered the only other two hits in the game for the Lady Techsters.
Frandrup (0-1) took the loss despite allowing only one earned run on one hit in 2.0 innings of relief. Kipp was tagged for six earned runs on nine hits and two walks in 4.0 innings.
