RUSTON - Louisiana Tech will put its nine-game winning streak on the line Monday night when the Lady Techsters host New Mexico State at 7 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center in Western Athletic Conference action.
Tech (16-5, 8-0 WAC) currently holds a two-game lead in the conference race after its 90-84 overtime win over Fresno State Saturday night while New Mexico State (10-11, 4-3 WAC) comes into the contest in fourth place in the WAC standings.
It will be the first of two games that the two programs will play against each other in a five day span as the Lady Techsters will travel to Las Cruces for a rematch on Saturday night.
Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon and Co. haven't lost a game since a Dec. 30 setback against 24th ranked Marquette as the nine-game winning streak is the longest by the program since a 15-game streak during the 2005-06 season.
All-American candidate Adrienne Johnson continues her assault on opponents averaging 22.2 points and 9.0 rebounds a game on the year. In WAC-only games, Johnson is averaging 23.4 points - which is the most by a WAC player since former Colorado State star and current WNBA all-star Becky Hammon averaged 26.6 points a game in 1998-99.
Johnson moved past Debra Williams and into 11th place on the all-time scoring list in her last outing and needs only 11 more points to pass former Kodak All-American Nora Lewis into the Top 10.
Tarkeisha Wysinger-Mackey has picked up her offensive pace over the last few games, averaging 15.2 points per contest over the last four games. Wysinger-Mackey, who has scored in double figures in six of the last seven games, scored a season-high 21 in the win over Fresno State.
As a team, LA Tech ranks second in the WAC in offense, averaging 73.1 points per game while scoring 90 or more points in four of its last six games. Tech also ranks No. 1 in the WAC in scoring margin at +9.6 points per game and second in field goal percentage at 42.2 percent.
New Mexico State relies heavily on four players as Madison Spence (14.3 ppg, 30 three-pointers), Jasmine Lowe (13.1 ppg, 31 three-pointers), Tabytha Wampler (12.7 ppg) and Danisha Corbett (11.0 ppg, 45 three-pointers) combine to score 77 percent of the Aggies points.
Tech fans are encouraged to wear their Western apparel for the game Monday night in conjunction with the promotional theme for the game. Numerous contests will be held during the night with prizes awarded including free airline tickets and more.
The contest can be heard on the LA Tech Sports Network on ESPN 97.7 FM with the pregame show beginning at 6:30 p.m. Fans can also access the video and audio of the game on the web through a subscription to LA Tech All-Access at www.latechsports.com.
