BOISE - Devon Bridges hit a three-run home run and Aubray Zell silenced Louisiana Tech's bats as Boise State defeated the Lady Techsters 6-2 Friday afternoon at Mountain Cove Softball Field.
Tech (11-26, 2-5 WAC) trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Broncos (23-13, 6-1 WAC) mounted a four-run outburst, highlighted by Bridges 10th home run of the season.
The inning started with a walk issued by Tech starter Meghan Krieg to leadoff hitter Tazz Weatherly. One out later, Weatherly stole second base in front of an RBI double by Holly Bourke, making the score 2-0.
Krieg then got the next Broncos batter to strike out swinging for the second out of the frame. Allie Crump then hit a weak blooper that fell just over the head of Krieg between the pitching circle and second base to put runners on first and third.
Bridges then launched the first pitch she saw deep over the left field wall as the Broncos took a 5-0 lead.
Tech answered with two unearned runs off of Zell in the top of the sixth. With two outs and no runners on base, Janna Frandrup doubled to right centerfield and then scored on an infield single by Allie Geisler and a throwing error by Broncos shortstop Mackenzie Whyte.
Heather Doiron then reached on a fielding error by second baseman Kellie Caplan to put runners on first and second. Meghan Knowles then lined a run-scoring double down the left field line, driving home Geisler and making the score 5-2.
Zell then retired Molly Goza on a ground ball to third base to end the threat.
Boise State plated a solo run in the bottom of the sixth in a two-out single by Bourke, her third hit of the game. Krieg did retire Bridges on a fly ball to centerfield two batters later with the bases loaded.
Zell yielded only a two-out single to Kendra Harmon in the top of the seventh inning to pick up her eighth win of the year.
Harmon led Tech with two hits while Frandrup, Geisler, Knowles and Katelynn Hill each registered one hit.
Krieg (7-15) took the loss, allowing six runs - five earned - on eight hits and five walks while striking out six in the game.
