Tech Soccer Wins 2012 Kick for the Cure Championship

April 15, 2012

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - On Saturday the Louisiana Tech soccer team won the fifth annual Melina Marie Evans Kick for the Cure 7-on-7 soccer tournament at Burns Park over 15 other collegiate teams.

"It was a long and tough day and the players did well to come through it all with a tournament win," said head coach Kevin Sherry. "It was interesting to see the players having to play different types of teams with different tactics as this can only help in their overall education of the game."

All proceeds from the tournament go to benefit the Arkansas Susan G. Koman for the Cure Foundation with last year's tournament raising over $15,000.

Teams were separated into four groups of four squads apiece with each team playing three games in their grouping. The top two in each group advanced to the single-elimination tournament. All of the contests were made up of two 18-minute halves.

The Lady Techsters were placed in Group A with Arkansas, Dallas Baptist and Union University. Tech opened with a 4-0 win against the Patriots and followed with 7-0 victory over the Razorbacks. In the final group contest, the Lady Techsters downed the Lady Bulldogs 2-0 to clinch first place in the group.

LA Tech began the single-elimination tournament with a 3-1 victory against Central Arkansas, the second place finisher of Group B. The Lady Techsters then defeated Arkansas-Little Rock 7-0 in the semifinals.

In the finals, LA Tech faced off against Dallas Baptist in a rematch from the group stage with the Lady Techsters pulling out a 2-1 victory.

"They just managed to fall over the line in first place after surviving a very tough schedule and a hard fought game in the finals," Sherry said. "The players had nothing left to give as the final whistle."

Louisiana Tech will host their second annual soccer fun fest on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.

"We look forward to the end of the 2012 spring season with our inaugural Tech vs. Faculty and Tech vs. Alumni game on Saturday as part of our annual community soccer festival activities," said Sherry.
