RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech senior infielder Taylor Terrasas and sophomore right hander Phil Maton each earned second team honors on the 2013 Louisiana Sports Writers Association all-state team Saturday.
Terrasas earned his spot on the team after leading the Bulldogs this season with a .292 batting average in his senior campaign after starting 53 of the 54 games he appeared in as an infielder. He also led the team in hits (59), doubles (16) and total bases (75) in his final season as a Bulldog.
The Santa Fe, Texas native wrapped up his career with the Bulldogs after being taken in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft in the 30th round by the Cincinnati Reds. This is the first all-state honor of Terrasas' career at Tech.
Maton returns to the all-state team for the second straight year after leading the Bulldog pitching staff with a 2.70 earned run average in 15 appearances on the mound in his sophomore season.
The Chatham, Ill. native led the WAC in strikeouts this season with 89 and ranked second among league pitchers in ERA in 2013.
Maton started 14 of the 15 games he appeared in and led the Bulldog pitching staff in ERA (2.70), innings pitched (96.2) and strikeouts (89). His 89 strikeouts also ranks him in the top 50 in the country among Division I pitchers.
Over the course of the season, Maton threw three complete games, more than any other pitcher for Tech, and in just two seasons with the Bulldogs, the sophomore has totaled 168 career strikeouts, which surpasses all other pitchers on the 2013 Bulldog baseball roster.
Maton was recently named to the 2013 first team all-Western Athletic Conference team voted on by the league's 10 head coaches. The sophomore was also named first team all-WAC by CollegeSportsMadness.com.
