LA Tech vs. Rice box score
LA Tech season stats
HOUSTON - Last weekend Louisiana Tech's Taylor Dennis recorded four goals in a single game.
On Sunday evening at Holloway Field, Rice's Holly Hargreaves did the same as the Owls defeated the Lady Techsters, 6-0.
LA Tech (8-3-1, 0-2 C-USA) put together 14 shots and six corner kicks on the day, but only two shots were on goal whereas Rice had 18 shots with 10 being on goal.
"We got beat by a very strong team today," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "We learned a valuable lesson about how we play and what we can take away from this moving forward. We have to change our style for the future."
A costly turnover by the back line in the 12th minute gave Rice (6-2-1, 2-0 C-USA) its first scoring opportunity of the match. Hargreaves was the recipient of a through ball which she got to her left foot inside the top of the box and beat the diving Kylee Seto to the right side netting.
LA Tech worked hard to try to come up the equalizer soon thereafter. They took the next four shots of the match with the best one coming from Brittany Beddow who found space and drove the ball low and hard but Rice's keeper came up with the diving save.
Hargreaves punished LA Tech again in the 22nd minute when she ran down a long ball, caught Seto in no-man's land and chipped the ball over her head into the net.
The magic of Hargreaves struck once more before halftime in the 41st minute on a hard right-footed drive to the low left corner, giving the Owls a 3-0 advantage at the break.
LA Tech found a flurry of chances early in the second half with strikes inside the 18 but they were either blocked or saved.
Unfortunately, Hargreaves was not finished as she notched her fourth goal of the game in the 68th minute on a flicked header from 10 yards out.
Rice's Lauren Hughes and Nia Stallings tallied the final two goals for the Owls who have not lost since its season opener.
Kathryn Sloan led the team with four shots. Brittany Beddow and Madison Doll each added three.
LA Tech will be on the pitch again on Friday, Oct. 3 when they take on Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
