BATON ROUGE - Two first half goals was enough for Louisiana Tech on Friday night as they held on to defeat Southern, 2-1, at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
The victory marked the fifth straight for LA Tech (5-0-1), but that fifth win did not come easy against a Southern (0-4) team who was in search of its first win of the fall season.
"Southern played great and deserve a lot of credit after putting up a strong fight," said head coach Kevin Sherry. "They were well organized and hard to break down. Tonight, we just lacked the technical ability and imagination to unlock their defensive shape. "
The Lady Techsters seemed well on their way to another high goal-scoring performance when Jenny Bitzer played a ball into the feet of Taylor Dennis in the third minute. Dennis then turned the defender and scored just inside the post from 18 yards out.
The goal was the fourth of the season for the senior, tying Brittany Beddow for the team lead.
LA Tech struck again in the 33rd minute when Keely Davis played a diagonal ball through to Lisanne Kleygrewe to run onto and then beat the keeper one-on-one.
Less than two minutes later, the Jaguars were able to cut the deficit in half as Fabiola Parra lifted a free kick over the wall into the corner for the score.
Parra had two more shots on goal, including one that came in the final 10 minutes of play, but the Techsters were able to preserve the win.
"Without Madison Doll, the result could have been different," said Sherry. "She had to put in many last ditch tackles to save us just when they were in striking distance of scoring."
The Techsters ended up outshooting the Jags, 16-7. Lensing picked up her first career victory in goal.
LA Tech returns home for another in-state dual. They will face Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
