LA Tech vs. WSU box score
WICHITA, Kansas - Louisiana Tech claimed wins at the top two singles spots but fell to No. 55 ranked Wichita State, 5-2, in the 2015 spring season opener on Friday evening at the Wichita Country Club.
"We took a lot of positives from today's match," head coach Chad Camper said. "Alexandra Starkova was as mentally strong as I have ever seen her and Jazmin Britos dug deep to pick up a great win. We learned a lot from our doubles and we look forward to getting better each match going forward."
LA Tech (0-1) got behind early with WSU (1-0) taking the doubles point off of wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
The Lady Shockers then took straight sets wins at No. 3 and No. 4 in singles to snag a 3-0 advantage. On court No. 5, Manoela Chiacchio was in trouble after dropping the first set, 6-0, but the junior turned it around in the second set to force a tiebreaker which went the way of WSU's Giulia Guidetti to clinch the match for the home team.
Not long after, the Lady Techsters picked up their first point with a decisive 7-5, 6-2 win by Starkova over Rebecca Pedrazzi who led the Shockers last season with 25 singles victories.
Meanwhile, Britos was heading to a super tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets against Gabriela Porubin. The sophomore would outlast the visitor, 10-8.
LA Tech returns to the court on Saturday when they make the trek to Stillwater, Okla. to battle No. 19 Oklahoma State.
