LA Tech Dominant on First Day of SMU Invite

Oct. 9, 2015

DALLAS ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" Louisiana Tech had a dominant first day at the SMU Invitational, sweeping all four doubles matches and grabbling seven singles wins on Friday at the SMU Tennis Complex.

Even though it had been three weeks since LA Tech participated in a fall tournament, they wound up posting an 11-1 combined match record in the first round including wins over Kansas State, TCU and Arkansas.

"We had about as good a day as possible," head coach Chad Camper said. "The players put their hard work at practice into use and we were victorious in all of our flights. There is still a lot of tennis to be played this weekend so we need to be focus, aggressive and ready to fight from the first point."

The tone was set as soon as the ball was served at 9 a.m. with all four doubles teams advancing to the semifinals of their flights.

The duos of Britos/Sramkova and Starkova/Chen both registered 6-2 victories as they defeated teams from TCU and Midwestern State, respectively.

After Merker/Perny bested Henry/Davis, 7-5, of Abilene Christian, Chiacchio/Culot took to the court and took down Arkansas' Jenning/Prakbar, 7-5.

The momentum carried over to singles, winning seven of the eight first round matches.

Alexandra Starkova got things started by recording a straight sets (6-3, 6-4) victory over Erin Walker of Abilene Christian.

Marta Sramkova (7-6, 6-3), Manoela Chiacchio (6-0, 6-1) and Meryl Culot (6-2, 6-1) followed suit by winning in straight sets as well.

It looked as if Jazmin Britos was going to lose in straight sets, down 6-0, 2-0 to Lucie Potheir (ACU), but the junior turned it on to win 12 of the next 15 games to complete the comeback.

Alba Escalona Perny was also in trouble, dropping the first set, 6-2, to Jordan Henry (ACU). The sophomore transfer was able to fight back and win the second set in a tiebreaker and then take the marathon match, 7-5, in the third set.

Taly Merker got the final win for the Lady Techsters, also coming back from a set down to upend Maria Panaite (Kansas State), 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Play starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
