RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech pitcher Phil Maton has been named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week after leading the Bulldogs to their first C-USA win at home this past Friday against Southern Miss.

The senior righthander helped Louisiana Tech split the series against the Golden Eagles in the second game of a doubleheader after tossing eight innings of two-hit baseball and striking out a career-high 12 Southern Miss batters in a 2-1 victory.

Maton held Southern Miss hitless in seven of his eight innings on the mound as the senior allowed one run on two hits, while posting the highest strikeout total by a C-USA pitcher this season. After giving up one run on two Southern Miss base knocks in the top of the first inning, Maton settled in and went on to shut out the Golden Eagles for the next seven innings, while the righthander did not allow another USM hit after the first inning.

In six starts this season, Maton leads the Bulldogs with a 3-0 record and a 2.45 earned run average, while he has struck out 42 batters, which ranks first on the team and among all Conference USA pitchers. The Chatham, Illinois native is also ranked in the Top 10 in C-USA in ERA and innings pitched.

This marks the second weekly honor a Bulldog player has earned this season and the third pitching honor of Maton's career.

Louisiana Tech returns to the diamond at 6 p.m. Tuesday to play hosts to Grambling State in a midweek matchup at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.
