LA Tech season stats
NORFOLK, Va. ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" The trend of the road team winning in the series continued on Sunday afternoon as Louisiana Tech shutout Old Dominion, 2-0, at the Old Dominion Soccer Complex.
For the third straight season, the visitor came away with the victory and it was a big three points earned by LA Tech (11-4-1, 3-3 C-USA) who pushed its total to nine in Conference USA play with four games to go.
"Today was the perfect birthday present," said head coach Kevin Sherry who turned 54 on Saturday. "It was a great win on the road against a very physical and tough ODU team. I thought we dominated the first half and then had to manage the second half as ODU pushed, which we did well. The second goal created by Haley and finished by Katie came at just the right time."
The Lady Techsters were on the attack early. It was the fourth minute when midfielder Stella Li passed the ball into the 18 where striker Kathryn Sloan got position in front of an ODU defender for a potential close range shot before being pulled down.
The head referee immediately blew his whistle, signaling a foul which rewarded LA Tech a penalty kick. Stepping up was midfielder Annabel Prior who put it into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage. It marked the senior's second goal of the season.
For the next 75 minutes, the back line and goalkeeper Kylee Seto stood tall against a lot of long high balls to help secure its lead in the match.
The much-needed insurance goal eventually came in the 79th minute that started with midfielder Lisanne Kleygrewe having great control of the ball while being man-marked before passing it off to Haley Laque on the right side.
Laque pushed a through ball into the 18 where Sloan delivered a sliding one-touch with her right foot that went past the diving keeper and inside the far post. It was Sloan's team-leading seventh goal of the season.
The squad finished the day with a 10-9 shot advantage, four of those coming from Sloan. Seto was credited with four saves which helped in the senior's 23rd career shutout.
LA Tech returns home next weekend with two league matches, starting on Friday, Oct. 21 versus Middle Tennessee. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
