2016 All-Conference USA Awards
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Louisiana Tech's Casey Sutton and Jonathan Washam have earned All-Conference USA honors, announced by the league office Tuesday in a vote by the head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives from each school.
Sutton received first team honors as a starting pitcher for the Bulldogs despite the junior being less than one year removed from Tommy John surgery. Sutton led Louisiana Tech's pitching staff with a 6-1 record in seven starts and 15 total appearances. Five of Sutton's six wins on the mound came in Conference USA play.
The junior right-hander led all Conference USA pitchers with a 1.43 ERA and recorded two complete-game shutouts against league opponents for the Bulldogs. Sutton struck out 41 batters he faced in 69.1 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .216 average at the plate.
Jonathan Washam was named second team All-Conference USA as a designated hitter/utility player after the junior finished the regular season with a .318 batting average in his first season with the Bulldogs.
Washam played in 47 games with 34 starts and totaled 42 hits, nine doubles, a triple and two home runs over the course of the season. The junior drove in 25 RBI's and posted a .368 on base percentage. Washam also came through in the clutch for LA Tech on several occasions as he recorded a .353 average with runners in scoring position.
Sutton, Washam and the rest of the Bulldogs will open play in the 2016 Conference USA Championship beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg. LA Tech is the 5-seed and is set for a rematch against 4-seeded Rice. The Bulldogs swept the Owls last weekend in Ruston.
