Four Bulldogs Earn All-Louisiana Baseball Honors

June 20, 2016

RUSTON, La. - Four different Bulldogs have earned spots on the 2016 All-Louisiana Baseball team while former LA Tech head coach Greg Goff was voted Coach of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, it was announced on Sunday.

Casey Sutton picked up first team honors as the ace of the Bulldogs' pitching staff, while Adam Atkins, Raphael Gladu and Chase Lunceford all earned spots on the second team.

The team was selected by a panel of statewide media members and the state's baseball sports information directors.

Goff, who recently accepted the head coaching position at the University of Alabama, was voted Louisiana Coach of the Year by the association after the second-year skipper led LA Tech to a 42-20 overall record and the team's first appearance in an NCAA Regional since 1987.

Sutton's first team honor is the second this season for the starting pitcher after he was named first team All-Conference USA in May. Sutton led all C-USA pitchers this season with a 1.91 ERA in 84.2 innings pitched while holding opposing hitters to a .235 average. He posted an 8-1 record on the mound for the Bulldogs in 17 appearances and nine games started after the Monroe native moved into the starting rotation in early April and tossed three complete games, two of which were shutouts. Six of Sutton's eight wins came against C-USA opponents, while the right-hander pitched into at least the sixth inning in eight of his nine starts.

Atkins was named second team All-Louisiana after the Bulldog closer ended his two-year career in Ruston tied for second all-time in a single season at LA Tech with nine saves in 2016. As a senior, Atkins led the pitching staff with a 1.20 ERA, posted a 6-1 record in 24 appearances and ranked fourth in C-USA in saves. His 16 career saves in two years gives the right-hander sole possession of third place all-time in the LA Tech record books. Atkins was recently drafted in the 18th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the New York Mets. He is currently playing for the Brooklyn Cyclones (Class A Short Season) in the New York-Penn League.

Both Gladu and Lunceford paced the Louisiana Tech offense this spring to earn second team All-Louisiana honors as an outfielder and third baseman, respectively. Gladu ranked first on the team with a .339 batting average and .429 on base percentage, while the Canadian's average never dropped below .300 in the 56 games he played in for the Bulldogs. The junior was named to the C-USA All-Tournament Team after hitting .636 (14-for-22) to lead LA Tech to a semifinals appearance in the 2016 C-USA Baseball Championship.

Lunceford also provided the 'Dogs with some quality offensive production in 2016 as the junior third baseman led LA Tech in hits (64), at bats (205), RBI (51), slugging percentage (.551) and home runs (11). The junior from Clinton, Mississippi, ranked third on the team with a .312 average and posted a team-best .330 clip in C-USA games with eight doubles, two triples, five home runs and 26 RBI's. Lunceford tallied 17 multi-hit games and a team-high 12 multi-RBI games in his first season with the Bulldogs, while the infielder hit .406 (26-for-64) on the season with runners in scoring position.

Sutton, Gladu and Lunceford are all three set to return to LA Tech for their senior seasons in the fall.
