LA Tech season stats
RUSTON ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" The Louisiana Tech soccer team held on to a one-goal advantage for over 75 minutes in the match until Marshall got a late equalizer and then a golden goal in the first overtime for a 2-1 win on Friday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
Just seven minutes into the game, LA Tech's (9-3-1, 1-2 C-USA)Haley Laque pushed the ball down the left wing and delivered a perfect through ball that sliced through the back line and found Kathryn Sloan who beat the opposing keeper to the ball and scored inside the far post on the one touch.
The crowd erupted as it was not only the senior's team-leading sixth goal of the year, but because it was career goal No. 33 for the senior making her the all-time career goal scorer in program history (passing Rachel King, 2008-11).
Meanwhile, Marshall (3-5-3, 1-2-1 C-USA) produced six shots in the first off but none were on goal.
In the second half, the Thundering Herd kept pressing forward trying to find the equalizer. However, the Lady Techster back line defended several dangerous free kicks to keep the opposition scoreless.
It was not until the 83rd minute when Shontelle Smith took a free kick from 25 yards out, putting it into the six where the ball snuck through the hands of a leaping Kylee Seto to make the match even at 1-1.
The Thundering Herd completed the rally in the 96th minute when Jayne Lawman received the ball and dribbled inside the right corner of the 18, creating just enough space to hit it past a diving Seto from 12 yards out.
Marshall ended up having an 18-7 shot advantage. Sloan paced the home team with two shot attempts. In net, Seto registered five saves.
It marked the third overtime game of the season for LA Tech and the first loss in extra periods.
LA Tech continues conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at home versus FIU. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
