RUSTON ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" In a hard fought match on Sunday afternoon versus Sam Houston State, the Louisiana Tech women's tennis team managed to come away with big point after big point in what ultimately resulted in a 6-1 victory at the LA Tech Tennis Complex.
A late rally on court one sealed the doubles point for LA Tech (2-2) which was followed by five wins on the singles courts, one coming in a third set and two more finishing in second-set tiebreakers.
"We knew going into it that Sam Houston was going to be fired up," head coach Amanda Stone said. "Three doubles gave us some needed momentum by closing their match out when they had the chance. Nadja took care of business today in her matches, but it was really Jazmin and Marta who showed up big for us when we needed it.
"The two seniors clinched the doubles then battled through two tough singles to put the match away. It was a great effort by all and we are really happy to get our first win at home."
The freshman duo of Nadja Manjon and Jill van den Dungen got the day started in the right direction for the Lady Techsters, winning 6-4 on court three.
Sam Houston State (2-2) was able to tie it up with a 6-3 victory on court two, bringing the doubles point down to court one between Jazmin Britos/Marta Sramkova and Carrie Casey/Mila Milanovic.
Britos and Sramkova found themselves down 5-3, but the tandem fought off three match points and went on to win four straight games to take the 7-5 victory, putting LA Tech up 1-0.
Manjon continued her strong early play into singles, overpowering SHSU's Casey with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 4 position for the Lady Techsters' second point of the day.
The Bearkats were then able to get in the scoreboard at court two with a straight-sets win. However, it was not long after that Haley Ballinger on court six delivered her own straight-sets win (6-3, 6-4).
The three remaining courts were all neck-and-neck despite LA Tech winning the first set in all three. Sam Houston State was able to push the singles match at No. 5 into a third set. Meanwhile, the No. 1 and No. 3 spots were each in a tiebreaker in the second set.
Britos had already won her first set on court one in a tiebreaker 7-2 and was in another with Fabienne Gettwart. The senior quickly found herself down 5-2, but she battled back just as she did in doubles. Fighting off two set points, Britos finally had match point at 8-7 and pulled off the clincher.
A minute later on the adjacent court, Sramkova came through in her tiebreaker as well, downing Khee Yen Wee by a score of 6-4, 7-6 (3). Alba Escalona Perny came out on top too, winning her marathon match 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
LA Tech returns to the courts on Saturday, Feb. 4 against Conference USA foe UAB in Birmingham. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
