BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Louisiana Tech women's tennis team dropped the doubles point to UAB, but they stormed back to win five singles matches to take the 5-2 conference victory on Saturday afternoon at George Ward Park.

LA Tech (3-2) was able to get straight-set wins on courts two, four and five. Then it was senior Marta Sramkova who delivered the clincher at the No. 3 position.

"It was great to get our first conference win today," head coach Amanda Stone said. "It came against a tough UAB team and we did well to come from behind after doubles to get the win. We really stepped up in all our singles and played very strong and determined.

"Sonia and Alba played really well in doubles and got us on the board early with their singles wins. The rest of the team showed a lot of grit in winning their lines to finish them off. I'm really proud of everyone."

UAB (1-4) got off to a hot start on its home courts in doubles, claiming a 6-3 win at No. 1 and a 6-2 win at No. 3 to grab the opening point.

Alba Escalona Perny was quickly able to even up the team match from the No. 5 spot in singles, dominating her opponent Natalie Voss in a 6-1, 6-1 win.

The Lady Techsters then took a 3-1 lead when sophomore Sonia Chen downed Marlene Herrmann 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 and freshman Nadja Manjon bested Hana Sisirak by a score of 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.

The Blazers picked up their second point with a three-set win from court six, but Sramkova was able to overcome a first-set loss to win 6-2, 6-1 in sets two and three to clinch the team victory.

An insurance point came on court one where senior Jazmin Britos outlasted Pardis Kianoush in a third-set super breaker by a score of 7-6 (3), 4-6, 1-0 (8).

LA Tech will stay in Birmingham and take on Samford on Sunday at noon at the Samford Tennis Complex.
