LA Tech season stats
SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The last two weekends, the Louisiana Tech women's tennis team has won on Saturday then lost on Sunday.
That was not the case this time as the Lady Techsters pulled off the road sweep, capped off by a 5-1 victory over Texas State at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
With the threat of rain in the forecast, LA Tech (6-4) and Texas State (2-3) went ahead and played singles first. On the singles courts, the Lady Techsters were able to pick up three victories in straight sets and two that went the distance in three sets.
"We had good focus today," head coach Amanda Stone said. "We didn't let the little things like weather or the order of the matches throw us off or distract us. It was a good test for our mental toughness and we responded well. Texas State is a good team. They've been playing the same teams as us very close. Coming off the court with a 5-1 win should give us some confidence in these tight matches going forward."
Freshman Nadja Manjon continued her strong start to the spring, grabbing the first point of the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Pippa Carr on court two. It was her sixth win in the last seven matches and her second straight from the No. 2 spot.
LA Tech then went up 2-0 when junior Alba Escalona Perny cruised to her team-leading fourth straight win, a 6-4, 6-0 victory versus Joy Chia Ming Ming at No. 5.
The Bobcats were able to get on the scoreboard after that, taking a point on court four with a straight-set win, but senior Jazmin Britos countered with a 6-3, 7-5 win against Eva Dench at court one.
Sophomore Sonia Chen and junior Haley Ballinger were each up a set in their matches, but Texas State grabbed set two on each court to force a deciding third set.
In Ballinger's case, the lefty dropped the second set 6-0 but rebounded to clinch the team match for LA Tech with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 win over Yadira Rubio.
Chen followed with an insurance point, outlasting J. Navajo-Melendez by a score of 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
LA Tech continues its six-game road stretch on Saturday, Feb. 25 when they travel to take on SEC foe Missouri. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
