DENTON, Texas ââ'¬" For the first time since 2014, Louisiana Tech found itself on the short end of the scoreboard in Conference USA action against North Texas as the Lady Techsters fell 6-2 and 4-3 to the Mean Green Saturday, snapping a 10-game winning streak in the series.
Tech (16-16, 4-4 C-USA) entered the weekend series after sweeping the three-game series against North Texas in each of the last three years. However, North Texas came through with timely hitting, capitalized on LA Tech defensive mistakes and kept the Techsters off the scoreboard for most of the day.
The two teams will complete the three-game series Sunday with a single game starting at 1 p.m.
Game 1: North Texas 6, LA Tech 2
North Texas banged out 11 hits and overcame three errors to defeat the Lady Techsters in the first game of the doubleheader.
Tech took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning as Bayli Simon's RBI double down the left field line scored pinch runner Emily Daniel from first base. The lead was short-lived. In the bottom of the frame, Hanna Rebar hit a solo home run deep over the left field wall against LA Tech starter Preslee Gallaway to tie the game at 1-1.
The Mean Green chased Gallaway in the bottom of the fifth inning. Harley Perella homered to start the frame to give NT a 2-1 lead and then added two more runs on two hits and a costly LA Tech throwing error.
Tech cut the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the sixth inning as Taria Page scored from second on a Marilyn Rizzato single and fielding error by North Texas left fielder Hannah Gerecke.
Once again, North Texas responded, plating two runs on two hits off Tech reliever Jenny Chapman in the bottom of the sixth inning.
NT starter Hope Trautwein (7-6) picked up the win in the circle. Gallaway (8-6) took the loss, allowing four runs ââ'¬" three earned ââ'¬" on nine hits and four strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.
Game 2: North Texas 4, LA Tech 3
For the second straight game, Tech fell behind early and was unable to fight its way all the way back in falling 4-3.
Tech mounted a rally in the top of the seventh inning trailing 4-1. Marilyn Rizzato singled and then Bayli Simon and Ali Galaz drew walks against North Texas starter Maria Priest. Following a pitching change, Jazlyn Crowder popped out before Kimmie Atienza lined a single to left field to score Rizzato and cut the deficit to 4-2.
Morgan Turkoly then drew a bases loaded walk to score Simon and cut the deficit to 4-3. Katie Smith then lined a ball that North Texas first baseman Rhylie Makawe caught, doubling the Tech base runner off for the game-ending double play.
Tech trailed 3-0 in the fifth inning when Simon reached on an error. Galaz then drove a double to right centerfield. Simon was called out on a controversial call at home plate -- the second at home plate and the fifth of the day on the base paths that all went against the Lady Techsters -- drawing an argument from Tech head coach Mark Montgomery.
Crowder then drove a triple off the base of the centerfield wall to score Galaz with the first run of the game, cutting the deficit to 3-1. North Texas added a run on a solo home run by Lacy Gregory off of Tech reliever Bailey Allen.
Krystal De La Cruz (2-6) took the loss, allowing two runs ââ'¬" one earned ââ'¬" on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
