RUSTON ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" The Louisiana Tech women's tennis team closed out its spring home schedule strong by shutting out crosstown foe Grambling State 7-0 on Thursday afternoon at the LA Tech Tennis Complex.
LA Tech (8-8) swept all three doubles courts over GSU (5-14) to grab the opening point in the match. In between sweeping all six singles courts via straight sets, a ceremony was held for lone senior Angela Lorenzo who took part in registering a doubles victory at No. 2 and a singles win at No. 3.
"I asked the team to come out and play with a lot of confidence and I thought they did that," head coach Amanda Stone said. "I thought we took it up a level on all of the lines. We should come out of this with a lot of confidence going into this weekend."
Lorenzo teamed up with her usual partner Nadja Manjon and made quick work on court two, disposing of Bryttish Burts and Danna Galeano by a score of 6-0, marking their fifth dual win together.
The point was clinched soon thereafter on court three when the first-time tandem of Paulina Cota and Claudia Oravcova won 6-1 over Tanyaradzwa Magunje and Keren Hap. Muswere. Court one was played out with the duo of Karla De La Luz Montalvo and Andrea Perez-Lopez taking it 6-2.
Getting the first point in singles was Sonia Chen who continued her dominance, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Muswere at the No. 2 position. With the victory, the junior extended her singles winning streak to 11 (has not suffered a lot since Feb. 12) while registering her team-leading 12th win.
LA Tech made it a 3-0 advantage when Lorenzo, playing her final home match as a Lady Techster, took down Burts by a final score of 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot.
The clinching point came a few minutes later on court five when Perez-Lopez delivered a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Galeano.
The Lady Techsters added three more insurance points on the remaining courts as Manjon won her 10th singles match of the spring with a 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1. Oravcova registered a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4 and Cota recorded a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6.
LA Tech will now head to San Antonio, Texas this weekend where they will take on two Conference USA opponents. First up is a matchup with UTEP on Saturday, followed by a meeting with UTSA on Sunday.
