LA Tech season stats
SAN ANTONIO ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" The Louisiana Tech women's tennis team put together a strong outing on Saturday afternoon, registering a 4-0 shutout victory over Conference USA opponent UTEP at the UTSA Tennis Center.
LA Tech (9-8, 1-2 C-USA) got up a point after Angela Lorenzo and Nadja Manjon provided a comeback win to clinch the doubles. With UTEP forcing to default at No. 6 singles due to injuries, the Lady Techsters received a point on court six as well as wins from Lorenzo and Sonia Chen to seal the league win.
"I'm proud of the resolve and toughness we showed today," head coach Amanda Stone said. "We did not have a great start in doubles, but Angela and Nadja really buckled down and pulled out the win. In singles, we started much stronger. Every line competed well and we were in control of the matches.
"Tomorrow we will look to come out with a lot of fire and energy and see if we can get back-to-back conference wins."
With the Miners also forced to default at No. 3 doubles, LA Tech needed just one win from either court one or court two to take the doubles point.
UTEP's Lois Wagenvoort and Raven Bennett provided a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot, bringing it down to the No. 2 position between Lorenzo/Manjon and Maria Paula Medina/Milena Baigorria.
The Lady Techsters quickly found themselves down 4-1 after the third changeover. The tandem kicked it into another gear though, winning five straight games (including a break at 4-4) to pull out the 6-4 victory.
LA Tech needed just two wins on the five singles courts to get to four points. Lorenzo made quick work on court four with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Medina for her third straight win. The senior improved her singles record to 6-2 on the spring.
With Chen and Karla De La Luz Montalvo both close to clinching, it was Chen who delivered match point first with a 6-2, 6-4 win versus Bennett on court two. It was the junior's 12th straight singles win, matching the program record for longest winning streak. She also set a new career-high with her 13th win of the spring and her 26th win overall.
The remaining three matches were stop with the match being clinched. Montalvo was just points away from winning on court three as the freshman was leading 6-3, 5-1. Claudia Oravcova was also up a set in her match at No. 5.
LA Tech will turn around and face UTSA on Sunday. First serve is set for 11 a.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
