LA Tech Blanks UIW Behind Roy-Ouellet’s Two Goals

Lady Techsters record first shutout of the season

RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech women's soccer team got back into the win column on Friday afternoon, blanking Incarnate Word 2-0 behind senior Mylene Roy-Ouellet's multi-goal performance.

It was a complete 180 from Sunday's loss as LA Tech (2-1-0) came out with a lot of intensity, winning almost every loose ball and controlling the majority of the possession.

In the midst of doing so, Roy-Ouellet recorded one goal each in the first half and the second half – the striker's fifth career multi-goal match – to help give the Lady Techsters the shutout win.

"The intensity was much, much better," head coach Kevin Sherry said.  "The team had more intensity, passing became more accurate.  That was across the board.  Every single player kept it simple and quick and because of that we controlled the game.  UIW was a high-pressing, high-energy team, but our accuracy was so good."

The first 45 minutes were dominated by LA Tech, allowing just one shot by Incarnate Word (0-2-0) which came on a free kick.

The Lady Techsters finally struck in the 22nd minute when freshman Sophia Smith cut back into the midfield at the top of the 18 and split the defenders with a through ball to Roy-Ouellet who had the one-touch finish inside the left post.

LA Tech would take nine more shots in the first period, but settled for a 1-0 advantage going into halftime.

However, that score did not stay that way for long as 38 seconds into the second period junior Alexandra LeBlanc won a 50-50 ball on the left flank, dribbled towards the goal line and sent a cross into the six where a charging Roy-Ouellet flicked it in from close range.

The goals were career No. 21 and 22 for the forward, moving her into sole possession of fourth for career goals in program history.

"Her strength is getting on the end of crosses or long balls," Sherry said.  "She loves to score goals and has a good mentality.  If she misses one, she simply wants the next one.  It is a good mentality to have as a striker."

Even though the Cardinals were able to generate eight more shots in the second period, only two of those came on goal which were saved by junior goalkeeper Carlotta Cartelli who picked up the victory (her fifth career shutout).

LA Tech finished with 15 total shots, eight of which were on goal.  Roy-Ouellet led the way with five shots, three coming on goal.  UIW was led by Sam Batley who registered three shot attempts.

The Lady Techsters will try to carry over the intensity to Sunday's match when they host I-20 foe ULM at 7 p.m.
