MACOMB, Ill. – The Louisiana Tech women's soccer team stormed back with three unanswered goals, two coming from sophomore
Elizabeth Doll, in the second period to take a 3-1 road victory over Western Illinois on Friday night at the Northwest Field.
LA Tech (5-1-0) trailed at the halfway point for just the second time this season, but regrouped to extend its winning streak to four with the two header goals from Doll and an insurance goal by junior
Kaylee Zettler to put the match away in the second period.
"I was not pleased with our energy or our passion in the first half," said head coach
Kevin Sherry who picked up career win No. 199 against his former school. "At halftime, we challenged them to dig deep and not to let that first half be a reflection of who we are.
"The second half was a revelation. We were doing the gritty stuff – running hard, tackling, challenging. And that fight we found was what got us across the finish line."
Despite outshooting Western Illinois (1-3-0) 10-4 in the first half, the Leathernecks got out in front thanks to a goal in the 31st minute by Emily Bollman.
It was not long into the second half that the team responded with their energy, passion and the equalizer. In the 48th minute, junior
Jaelyn Peeples took the corner kick and found her target Doll who delivered the game-tying goal from the air.
That combination hooked up again in the 52nd minute, again off a set piece. Peeples sent a free kick from about 30 yards near the left sideline that found Doll again who sent the header into the right corner of the net.
Peeples upped her season assist total to four while Doll recorded her first career multi-goal game while also matching her career total from her freshman year.
The Lady Techsters add their third goal in the 71st minute when a pass was sent into the 18 to Zettler. The transfer controlled it and then rifled it into the bottom left corner from eight yards out for her fourth goal of the season, tying for the most on the team.
LA Tech ended up with a 21-8 shot advantage over WIU, Doll and Zettler leading the squad with three apiece. Goalkeeper
Carlotta Cartelli picked up win No. 4 on the season, totaling three saves in net.
The Lady Techsters finish up their road swing on Sunday, Sept. 2 when they go up against Graceland with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Coach Sherry will go for career win No. 200 where his coaching career began.
