LAMONI, Iowa – Louisiana Tech head coach
Kevin Sherry came to the United States and began in college coaching career in women's soccer back in 2001 at a place called Graceland University.
Fast forward to 2018 and Sherry returned to his old stomping ground, this time to take on the Yellowjackets.
As fate would have it, the 4-1 victory by the Lady Techsters on Sunday night at Rasmussen Field turned out to be an extra special one in the form of career win No. 200 in the midst of his 18th total year at the helm.
"Graceland is a very special place for me and to bring my team here to play was a great moment," Sherry said. "To win my 200
th game at the place where it all began was an incredible coincidence and something which made the day extra special.
"The game itself was a good one and Graceland proved a very worthy opponent. They were wonderful hosts and I want to offer my sincerest thanks for helping make it a day I will never forget."
With the positive result, LA Tech (6-1-0) was able to sweep a tough three-game road stretch through the Midwest in Missouri, Illinois and finally in Iowa in just five days' time. In doing so, they extended their winning streak to five games with three more non-conference matches to go.
The Lady Techsters were on the attack early on in the first period, sending off seven shot attempts in the first 20 minutes but unable to connect on any of them.
Then in the 23rd minute, it was the combination of junior
Jaelyn Peeples and sophomore
Elizabeth Doll hooking up yet again on a set piece.
What resulted in two goals this past Friday at Western Illinois also resulted in the opening goal on Sunday as Peeples sent a corner kick into the six where it found her tall target who delivered the header goal. It marked Doll's third goal of the season and it was Peeples' team-leading fifth assist, matching her season high from a year ago.
LA Tech was not done in the first half. Later on in the 34th minute, sophomore
Amber Posthauer recorded her first goal of the season to give the Lady Techsters a 2-0 advantage after she cut the ball inside from the left wing and hit a looping shot into far corner.
Junior
Andrea Rodriguez made it 3-0 just three minutes later when senior
Nomvula Kgoale sent a perfectly-timed through ball into the six to a charging Rodriguez who flicked it past the keeper for her first career goal.
The score remained that way at halftime and for quite some into the second period as neither team was able to generate many scoring chances. That was until Graceland (1-3-0) found the back of the net themselves, complements of Leonie Boulanger-Tremblay in the 86th minute.
Another first-time goal scorer for LA Tech, freshman Sophie Smith, countered with just over a minute remaining in the match as she mopped up a rebound in the six after sophomore
Gabrielle Parent sent a free kick into traffic just outside the 18.
LA Tech finished with a 25-4 shot advantage, 14 of those coming on goal. Junior
Stella Li led the way for the Lady Techsters with five shot attempts.
Getting the victory in net was freshman
Katharine Price who saw her first career action, recording three saves in the process.
LA Tech will now return home where they will take on crosstown foe Grambling State on Thursday, Sept. 6 at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
