Halftime Adjustments Pay Off for LA Tech in 3-0 Win

Lady Techsters extend winning streak to six

RUSTON – Adjustments made by head coach Kevin Sherry at halftime paid off with two early goals in the second period and another with seconds to go in the match as Louisiana Tech downed crosstown foe Grambling State, 3-0, on Thursday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.

The packed complex saw LA Tech (7-1-0) squander some golden 1v1 opportunities in the first period, sending the match to the midway point at nil-nil.

The Lady Techsters immediately put into action the tactical changes which led to back-to-back goals by strikers Mylene Roy-Ouellet and Kaylee Zettler within 79 seconds of each other.  Midfielder Stella Li added a header goal late in the contest to put the match away.

"We could see that our wide players were penetrating their back line," said Sherry on the halftime adjustments.  "Rather than having Sophia there, we put Kaylee there so that we would have a stronger athlete penetrating their back line.  Within minutes, the results were there.  It was just like we drew it up.

"That was one of the best games we have played in regards to intensity and meeting the physical challenge.  Now we maintain that going forward."

LA Tech had a 10-1 shot advantage in the first half, including close-range chances from Zettler and Li that were misfired outside the post.  Both redeemed themselves in the second half.

In the 47th minute, Zettler took a loose ball at midfield and made a long run up the right flank.  The junior turned on the jets and went directly for the end line, crossing it before her defender to get a foot on it.  On the receiving end was Roy-Ouellet who made the run at the near post and converted the sliding shot for her fifth goal of the season.

The two hooked up again in the 48th minute.  After a shot by Li inside the 18 was blocked, the ball was controlled out of the air by Roy-Ouellet who played it back to Zettler.  The forward then sent the one-touch rocket into the right corner of the net for her fifth goal of the season as well.

Finishing the scoring was Li who in the 90th minute ran down a long ball from defender Alexandra Augustyn and was able to head the ball over the keeper who came off her line.  It marked Li's second goal of the season.

Helping pitch the eighth straight win for LA Tech over GSU (2-5-0) was keeper Katharine Price, making her second consecutive start.  The freshman totaled five saves, including a terrific punch save over the crossbar in the second period, to record her first career shutout.

LA Tech finished the match with a 17-7 shot advantage.  Roy-Ouellet led the way with five shots, including three that were on goal.

The team will not have much time to rest as they travel to the state of Mississippi on Friday to take on Alcorn State.  Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
