SAN ANTONIO – The Louisiana Tech soccer team was not able to pick up a road conference win on Sunday, falling 1-0 to UTSA at the Park West Athletics Complex.
Â
It was a set piece kind of day for both teams with numerous corner kicks and free kicks. And in the end, the one goal scored came via UTSA (7-6-1, 3-4 C-USA) who found the back of the net after one of their set pieces in the second half.
Â
"We were too lethargic for the first 70 minutes of the match," said head coach
Kevin Sherry. "The intensity was there after we went down 1-0 and probably deserved a goal for their effort, but we ran out of time. The required intensity levels came too late."
Â
In the first half, it was LA Tech (11-4-2, 3-4-1 C-USA) who was having to fend off the set pieces. The Roadrunners produced four corner kicks through the first 45 minutes of action, as well as a handful of dangerous free kicks in their attacking third after fouls committed by the Lady Techsters.
Â
The defense was up for the challenge though despite UTSA generating 10 shot attempts with three coming on goal and all three being saved by
Carlotta Cartelli.
Â
The senior goalkeeper continued to come up big in the second half after a scoreless first half. She fought off a couple of 1v1 opportunities by UTSA to keep them off the scoreboard.Â
Â
In the 73rd minute,
Alexandra LeBlanc was issued a yellow card which gave the home team a free kick from the right flank. After the left-footed cross was cleared away, Kendall Kloza chased it down in the far left corner of the 18 and sent the one-touch chip over the line and inside the far post.
Â
LA Tech was on the attack from then on, searching for the equalizer. The Lady Techsters totaled three corner kicks in the second half as well as six shots.Â
Â
The closest they got to tying the match up was in the 77th minute when
Gabrielle Parent subbed in and fired a one-touch rocket on a loose ball inside the box, but the opposing keeper was able to punch the ball over the crossbar.
Â
There were a couple of positives in the match for LA Tech. After missing the last two matches due to injury, leading goal scorer
Autumn Woodard returned to action playing a limited amount of minutes.
Â
Speaking of minutes,
Jaelyn Peeples broke the program record for career minutes played when she reached 6,615 minutes of action.
Â
Next up for LA Tech will be its final home match of the season on Sunday, Oct. 27 at noon against Marshall. Five seniors – Peeples, LeBlanc, Cartelli,
Kaylee Zettler and
Stella Li – will be honored on Senior Day.
