@LATechWBB Hosts Memphis Wednesday

RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech head coach Brooke Stoehr saw some of the good, the bad and the ugly in the Lady Techsters season-opening 93-61 win over LSU-Alexandria a week ago.

She hopes to see less of the latter Wednesday night when Tech hosts Memphis at 6:30 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the game can be heard on the LA Tech Sports Network on KNBB 97.7 FM with the pregame show slated for 6 p.m. Fans can also watch it through a paid subscription to CUSATV.com.

In Tech's 32-point win over LSU-A in the opener, the Lady Techsters struggled early, trailing by as many as four points early in the second quarter to the NAIA Generals. Tech settled down though and coasted to the win.

Stoehr said she has been pleased with the way her team has responded in practice the last week following film work that illustrated some of the reasons for the slow start.

"I was pretty disappointed in our defensive effort in the first quarter," said Stoehr. "When I looked at the film, it was so many little things as far as communication and just details that we need to clean up. After watching the film with our players, they understood that.

"We have had some good days in practice working with the guys on transition defense and some things we need to improve. I think these early season games come down to can you take care of the basketball and can you not give up easy baskets. We just need to make sure we are doing a solid job with that."

One of the positives for Tech was the play of some of its newcomers. Tech's seven first-year players combined for 45 points in the win, highlighted by Lotte Sant's 15 points and Anna Larr Roberson's 10 points and 14 rebounds.

"We can't get discouraged early in the year," said Stoehr. "We have a lot of young, inexperienced players whether that's freshman, sophomores or players that are just new to the program. It is going to take some time. We have to be patient and continue to teach. As long as their energy and effort is there, we will be just fine."

Memphis enters the contest with a 1-1 record after a 57-51 win over Alcorn State and a 63-60 loss to Eastern Kentucky. The contest will be the first road game of the year for the Tigers, a team that has played two relatively low scoring close games to start the year.

Jamirah Shutes leads Memphis, averaging 17.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest thus far while no other Tiger is averaging more than 7 points a game. The Tigers are holding their opponents to just 29 percent shooting from the field, but have struggled taking care of the basketball, averaging 23 turnovers a game.

Tech leads the all-time series with Memphis 10-4, including a 66-50 win over the Tigers on the road last season.
