LA Tech (3-1) got back into the win column this past Tuesday, using its defense to come away with a 76-43 victory over Mississippi Valley State. The Bulldogs held the Delta Devils to 23.9 percent shooting from the field, the lowest mark against a D1 opponent since 2014.
The 'Dogs also pulled down 56 rebounds in the contest, the most in a single game since 2013. Nine of those came from Mubarak Muhammed who is averaging 11.7 boards per game over the last three games.
LA Tech has held three of its first four opponents to 52 points or less this season. They currently have a scoring defense of 56.5 points per game which ranks 23rd in the country.
Their field goal percentage defense is even better, ranking eighth in the nation, allowing just 32.6 percent shooting by their opponents.
The team currently has four players averaging double-figure scoring on offense with Kalob Ledoux (11.8), JaColby Pemberton (11.5), DaQuan Bracey (11.0) and Amorie Archibald (10.0).
After spending several years in the Gulf South Conference in Division II, North Alabama (2-3) transitioned to Division I in 2018-19. The Lions went 10-22 in their first season as a member of the ASUN conference.
Under second-year head coach Tony Pujol, UNA has produced wins over Carver and Samford, both at home, while dropping all three road games to South Carolina, Indiana and most recently a 78-73 setback at South Dakota State.
Following a breakout freshman season, guard Jamari Blackmon was named a member of the ASUN preseason all-conference team. He was named the ASUN Freshman of the Year last season as the top freshman scorer in the league at 14.6 points per game.
Blackmon is the lone Lion averaging double-figure scoring through five games at 13.8 points per contest. He put up a season-high 26 points in the five-point loss to the Jackrabbits. He also leads the team in total assists (22) and steals (11).
North Alabama is one of just two opponents this season that LA Tech will face for the very first time, the other being SUNO.
