Sherry Finalizes Class with Goalkeeper Signee

Christina Hjelvik from Norway inks NLI

RUSTON – Louisiana Tech soccer head coach Kevin Sherry added more depth to the goalkeeper position on Tuesday with the signing of Christina Hjelvik to a national letter of intent.

Hjelvik hails from Lillestroem, Norway and is the 19th and final signee for the 2019 recruiting class.

"It was important to bring in another goalkeeper so we are covered in case of injuries happening in the keeper pool and by bringing the number to four goalkeepers we increase the level of competition within the group, which will raise the level of our goalkeeping in general," said Sherry.

Hjelvik has played for several club teams in Norway, including Skedsmo Fotballklubb who placed second in the Norway Cup and was twice a Division I league champion as part of the Girls 17U.

She also placed third in the Dana Cup with LSK Kvinner in 2017 and was a two-time Division I champion in 2018 and 2019 with Grei Kvinner Elite.

"Christina is a very good goalkeeper who is exceptional with her foot distribution," said Sherry.  "Because of the way we play with our possession style, having a goalkeeper who is comfortable with the ball at her feet is essential.  Having four goalkeepers with different skill sets gives us broader options when playing teams with different styles."

The 2019 season gets underway for LA Tech on Aug. 23 at Southeastern Louisiana.
