First-Half Goals Enough for LA Tech to Remain Undefeated

Autumn Woodard and Alpine Williams scored to help the Lady Techsters win, 2-1

ALEXANDRIA, La. – On another hot and humid day on the road, the Louisiana Tech Soccer team pulled out another victory, getting two first-half goals that proved to be enough in a 2-1 win over LSU-Alexandria on Tuesday at the Generals Field.

For a second straight game, sophomore Autumn Woodard and freshman Alpine Williams found the back of the net.  LA Tech (4-0) conceded its first goal of the season when LSUA (1-2) scored three minutes into the second half, but the Lady Techsters held on for the one-goal win.

"It was another tough road games in tough conditions," said head coach Kevin Sherry.  The highlight of the day was Alpine's goal, a very composed finish that proved to be the difference.

"There was much better intensity in the second half after LSUA scored.  And it was evident that the leadership of the upperclassmen, when it started to get tough in the second half, played a big influence in putting us over the finish line."

It was the third straight game in the heat and on the road, but LA Tech was still able to control much of the possession in the match.

Then in the 24th minute, freshman Klesha Darroux was very active up the left side and ran down the ball near the end line.  After winning a 50/50 ball, she sent a cross that was first chipped by sophomore Connor Barker that was saved.

However, Woodard was in the right place at the right time as her one-touch finish found the back of the net to give the Lady Techsters the 1-0 advantage.

Ten minutes later, freshman Jahmoia Henderson was the active player.  She was in the midfield and controlled a loose ball, then sent a left-footed cross into the opposite corner of the 18 where Williams volleyed the pass off her chest and then finished with her left foot from 12 yards out.

LSUA quickly sliced that deficit in half early in the second period.  The Generals' Jordan Thibodeaux found some open space from 25 yards out at the top of the box.  LA Tech's Christina Hjelvik got a hand on it, but the ball snuck in under the crossbar.

The Lady Techsters had numerous chances through the remainder of the match to tack on an insurance goal like when Woodard was called offside on a potential goal and when Williams had a shot go off the crossbar.

However, the two goals were still enough to produce the fourth win of the early season.

LA Tech will now head to south Louisiana to conclude its stretch of four road games in four days.  They will take on Nicholls State on Wednesday with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
