LA Tech Picks Up Historic Win in Impressive Fashion

Program notches win No. 150 in 5-1 defeat of I-20 neighbor

MONROE – Friday night's dominant 5-1 win by the Louisiana Tech soccer team over ULM at Brown Stadium was not just the fifth win of the season for the Lady Techsters, it was also the 150th victory in the program's 16-year history.

LA Tech (5-0) scored two header goals off corner kicks in the first half.  They then scored three goals in the span of 10 minutes in the second half, one coming off another set piece and the other two being a rebound goal and a 1v1 win against the opposing keeper.

"It is always nice to have a landmark win like this," said head coach Kevin Sherry who has been part of 139 of the 150 victories.  "I am very proud of my players for adapting to ULM's aggressive style and playing quickly, moving the ball around the field.  It was a good experience for the team to know that they can handle an aggressive team and come out with a win.

"The offensive side of the game finally started to click.  Kaylee Zettler deserves great praise for stepping into the back line and doing such a great job.  And Jaelyn Peeples was majestic in the midfield."

The match was stuck at nil-nil for a good portion of the first half.  That was until the 28th minute when senior Jaelyn Peeples sent a corner kick into the box where it was headed back across goal by junior Elizabeth Doll to sophomore Autumn Woodard who headed it home.

Three minutes later, the Lady Techsters earned another corner kick after freshman Quinn Parks' shot at net was tipped over the crossbar by the ULM (0-2-1) keeper.  The one-two punch of Peeples and Doll connected again for a set piece/header goal to make it 2-0.

In the 54th minute, it was another corner kick by Peeples and another goal scored by LA Tech.  This time, it was senior Kaylee Zettler who found the back of the net off a chipped shot past the keeper from the right.  It marked assist No. 3 for Peeples, tying the single-game program record.

The Lady Techsters continued to run away with the match, registering goal No. 4 in the 57th minute when Woodard sent a through ball to freshman Klesha Darroux who made the run and sent a shot that was initially saved, but freshman Josie Studer put in the rebound for her first career goal.

LA Tech's fifth and final goal came in the 60th minute when a miss clearance by a ULM defender allowed Woodard to score her second goal of the night as she took possession of the ball and delivered from eight yards out on the 1v1 with the opposing keeper.

It was a near shutout, but the Warhawks got on the scoreboard with 40 seconds remaining in the match as Taylor Altieri notched a goal for the home team, assisted by McKenzie Rizqi.

Woodard led the way with four shots and five points.  The transfer now leads the team in points (17) and goals (seven) on the season.  Peeples now has a team-leading six assists on the season, already tying her mark from a year ago.  And goalkeeper Carlotta Cartelli registered her second win of the season after recording a career-tying six saves.

LA Tech is off to its best start to the season since 2009 with five straight wins.  The five goals was the most scored by the Lady Techsters versus the Warhawks.  It was also the fifth straight win against their I-20 neighbor, outscoring ULM, 16-2, during that span.

LA Tech will conclude its grueling road stretch on Sunday, Sept. 1 when they travel to Natchitoches to take on Northwestern State at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
