MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Sophomore
Autumn Woodard scored again and the Louisiana Tech soccer team won again, defeating Montevallo by a final score of 3-1 on a steamy Sunday afternoon at the Georgine Lemak Soccer Field.
LA Tech (8-0-0) netted the first goal of the day off the foot of
Amber Posthauer, the lone goal scored in the first half. After Montevallo (0-1-1) equalized, Woodard delivered the game-winning goal and the Lady Techsters got an insurance goal later on from
Sophie Fijneman.
"Montevallo deserves a lot of credit," said head coach
Kevin Sherry. "They were a good technical team, but our athleticism was able to win out today. We had some good individual performances today, like
Jaelyn Peeples and
Katie Cook.
"Non-conference is so much about learning about ourselves and we now feel like we know our best tactical approach to take into games. Our goal now is to perfect that adopted style of play."
The Lady Techsters nearly scored in the opening seconds when they immediately earn themselves a corner kick. The set piece resulted in a strong header by
Elizabeth Doll, but it banged off the crossbar.
Posthauer would find the back of the net in the 13th minute though. The series started with a long ball sent up the left side by
Alexandra LeBlanc. It was a race between Woodard and the opposing keeper, who came off her line, to get to the ball first.
The two players arrived at the same time and a Falcon defender ended up clearing the ball. However, Posthauer was in the right place and sent a chip from 35 yards away over the keeper's head for her seventh goal of the season.
The score would remain 1-0 in favor of LA Tech at halftime, but Montevallo tied it up in the 54th minute of the second period when Tylor Ring blocked a pass from LeBlanc and made a long run up the right send before sending a shot from 20 yards out at the near post.
Less than two minutes later, the Lady Techsters retook the lead. Fijneman took possession of a throw-in at midfield, took a couple of dribbles and sent a long cross to Woodard who chipped it over the keeper at the top of the box.
The transfer strike has now scored in seven straight games, totaling 10 goals on the season. She is now one of just five players in program history to reach double-digit goals in a single season (Rachel King, Kathryn Sloan,
Kiva Gresham and
Jenna Dages).
Fijneman tacked on an insurance goal, her first as a Lady Techster, in the 68th minute when she converted a penalty kick after Woodard was taken down in the box.
Woodard took six of the team's 14 shots on the day. In net,
Tuva Sallvin registered seven saves in the win.
Katie Cook came on in relief in the second half and recorded three saves.
LA Tech will wrap up its non-conference slate on Wednesday, Sept. 11 when they play at crosstown foe Grambling State. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
