Day One Concludes for LA Tech at Hurricane Invite

LA Tech falls to Tulsa and Wyoming to open the spring season

TULSA, Okla. – Two months removed from the fall season, the Louisiana Tech tennis team got its spring season underway on Saturday with two dual matches played indoors at the Hurricane Invite at the Case Tennis Center.

In the morning match, LA Tech fell to host Tulsa by a score of 4-0.  Then in the second match, the Lady Techsters were in a tight battle with Wyoming, but lost 4-1.

"It was a tough start, but a good showing overall today," said head coach Amanda Stone.  "We hung in there with Tulsa and were competitive on most courts.  It was good for our players to see some of the things we work on have success against such high-caliber players.  I was really happy with their effort."

The Golden Hurricane were able to grab the doubles point to get the event started, winning by scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-4 on courts one, two and three, respectively.  Tulsa (3-0) then picked up singles wins at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 spots to clinch.

Sophomore Ana Jover had the strongest showing on court two, having some set-point opportunities, but she ended up dropping a 6-4, 7-6 match.

LA Tech (0-2) and Wyoming (1-0) started with singles first and almost every court was close.  The top of the lineup played first and Jover put another strong effort together and this time got the win with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 2.

Nadja Manjon was able to force a third set at the No. 1 position, but lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, and Ilana Tetruashvili dropped a close one at No. 3, 7-5, 6-4.

With freshman Alexia Romero about to go into a third set on court five, the match was stopped as the Cowgirls clinched with straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 6.

"In our second match, we really pushed Wyoming on all courts," said Stone.  "Although the match didn't end up going our way, we showed ourselves that we've made massive improvements from a year ago at this tournament."

The two teams will still play doubles Sunday morning.  LA Tech will then take on Montana State at approximately 9:30 a.m.
